Well, I can't say that I'm too happy with the crimes rates there either...Actual crime in the US is underplayed...
I know we're talking per capita, but considering we're also talking crime in the entire country, it is important to look at cities and scale. For example, New York City metropolitan area is almost twenty million people. That area has more people than around 130 countries (individually, not combined, of course.)
Again, I know we're talking per capita but, point is...that's a lot of capita. This is true for other countries too, but a lot of the crime is happening in the cities, and then often within a few blocks or neighborhoods in those cities.
My point is, America doesn't have a crime problem, a few of our cities have crime problems, largely because they refuse to go after criminals. Important distinction if we're talking the safety of a country as a whole. Unless you're in a crime-rich environment, you're basically never going to be affected by crime. Some of our cities just suck.
