Unless you're the smartest person alive, you are going to get stuck on a clue or two. What do you consider as cheating? Is asking someone else cheating, is looking it up cheating? I'm sure for official tournaments and stuff it's defined, but I'm just wondering about your personal thoughts.

Looking up the base knowledge is no shame, like if the clue references a historic event you know nothing about. Asking someone else is technically cheating, but the fun kind. Tools that help compile compatible words are cheating, brute forcing by just browsing a dictionary isn't cheating but it's only a partial credit.
I think I'm similar in your thinking. If I'm researching the answer, as in using references I feel like I'm learning and not just looking to cheat. Of course that is kind of a thin line
