Better times, indeed. Back in ‘96 it was perfectly acceptable to use the term “retard” not only for one’s friends, but also for actual retarded people!
Brother, when I was in high school in the late 90s, we had two attention-seeking whores come out "as lesbian" and it essentially shocked my whole town. Everyone and their dog knew they were just doing it for attention, but everyone purposefully ignored it and immediately shunned them anyway. They dropped the act within a few months.
That was two girls out of around a thousand students in a fairly substantial metro area of ~15000 people. Were there secret gays and lesbians I or anyone else didn't know about? Most assuredly. The difference back then is that things were so normal and peaceful that two dumb whores were a centerpiece of quiet whispers for a whole town instead of the full blown aids carnival we have now.
Not addressing this to you specifically, but to any younger (20-30) people reading this now, don't EVER let them gaslight you into thinking things were always gay and trans. Everyone was fucking normal back then and literally everything was better, socially, materially, and spiritually. "Practically zero" trannies was in fact quite literally zero in the experience of every single citizen.
That was the year I found out the guy who did the music for A Clockwork Orange and Tron became a chick. I giggled and said "I wonder what happened to him when he was a kid? Weird. Anyway..." And why? Because trannys just went about their business back then. And we were sure it's a genuine case of body dysmorphia because it wasn't a trendy social contagion back then.
Last stupid comment from me on this thread this minute: He says 1996 sixth-grader as if that's a bad thing.
Those were better times, and we had practically zero trannies to deal with, too.

"Retarded" used to be the polite, politically correct of saying "idiot". It does, after all, just mean "slow".
The language treadmill has been going on for centuries.
"Practically zero?"
