Flight plans get cancelled or delayed for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes it's just airspace routing or just the total volume of landings happening at an airport.
That's why you file in advance. So you don't show up to a closed airport.
Probably one of the funniest ATC moments I've listened to was a fully loaded 747 managing to just barely land on a nearly blacked out, shortened runway, on a closed regional airport that was like 30 miles from the major airport they were supposed to be at.

I heard it on a YouTube a few months back, but I can't see which one it is. There's been a few.
