Mindflayer sex doesn't exist! Illithid reproduce by eating the brains of other sentients whilst implanting their tadpoles into the brains of yet more other sentients! When a mindflayer is old enough its brain gets removed and put into a large paddling pool where it then spawns the aforementioned tadpoles, there is no sex at any stage of this lifecycle, only mind rape and mind eating!

They took what was an actual alien, horrifying, and inherently parasitic species and turned them into yet another misunderstood race with different cultures.
