It didn't help that many converts were polytheistic like their ancestors, and changing to monotheism was already a difficult leap for them.
Well, that and a lot of people who call themselves "Christian" don't make Jesus their Lord.
Gnosticism and Arianism have been present since almost day 1. This is why John had to write to the churches in Revelation and Paul had to write his letters.

I recently read about the disciples spreading the gospel after Jesus ascended. Definitely have been infiltrators since day one
