if this was in isolation and was going to focused on Ciri being a Witcher from one of the endings of 3, this could work well.
Those situations never work well which is why Mass Effect 4 had to spin out a story that "started" before the end of 3 with the launch of the arks and was then far enough away none of the endings of 3 would matter. Not that they ended up mattering anyway.
Besides it's not just which ending someone picks that will start a flame war, it's also which romance option Geralt ends up with [cough Yen], which armour Geralt uses [cough cough Grandmaster Bear], or even which Gwent deck he uses [hacking cough Northern Realms spy build], as well as countless other decisions that all 3 games lead up to. W3 did what ME failed to do when having past decisions come back in some form or another because the devs weren't yet entirely shit at their jobs.
Sorc from W1 who you can let die then or save only to meet again in W3 where she's been captured and tortured by the Witch Hunters so you have the option to euthanise her anyway.
Saving the sorc Keira Metz from her own retarded decision to go talk to the King who hates sorcs more than anything in his life.
How the ongoing war in the background actually ends and whether you even bother in the first place to get involved.
It's a big, big game that ends up with so much going on that later sequels are just going to be crushed by all the player generated history from the past games, let alone how poorly the new hires at the company will fuck it up.
What should be considered with any potential W4 is just how much it DEIs and gets the SBI treatment where the lead will be a female witcher, despite those being almost non-existent in any of the games, how much blatant woke pandering and virtue signalling will happen from random NPCs would you can't even get rid of but will tell you their entire life story as if it's a Twitter bio with pronouns and other info nobody even asked about.
The best thing any W4 game can do is completely ignore Geralt and every other W1-3 character because it will inevitably fuck them up through incompetence and/or malice when trying to "big up" the new OCs because modern writers can only ever drag down existing characters for comparisons rather than write something that solely benefits the new OCs. But then that premise also faces the problems of:
A) Make it a prequel so it's detached enough the existing characters, but then why the fuck has nobody heard of the new OCs if they end up doing important thing? Aka, why are all the black dwarves from Ring of Power dead by the time of Lord of the Rings? Woops, unintentional genocide by Woketards yet again! 🙄
B) Make it a sequel but then fill it with retarded references to the other games because when it comes to actually writing any depth to a story or character the "best" modern writers can manage is either to flat out copy and paste other things or end up with a mess of pronouns and other IDPOL that has all the depth of a wide puddle.
Make it a prequel so it's detached enough the existing characters
I'm going to slightly disagree for one reason I thought of that if they did NO DEI shit or ideology pushes would make BANK and might even surpass W3:
Have a prequel where we can play as Vesemir in his prime, you tell players we can play as the Witcher universes Uncle Iroh in his prime with no DEI shit, money would pour in so fast that people would confuse CDProjekt Red for a Bank!
Have a prequel where we can play as Vesemir in his prime, you tell players we can play as the Witcher universes Uncle Iroh in his prime with no DEI shit
Vesemir is described as being one of the oldest witchers in the world, possibly old enough to have seen the witcher castle built. That's a lot of years to inject DEI shit into despite existing game material like his affair with the woman Geralt meets at the auction house in the Hearts of Stone DLC.
"Oh he had a straight relationship? Well he's bi now and every other person he knew was my a demi-sexual, half human, half dragon, super mage who is more powerful than everyone else in the world ever, even Ciri and Lara Dorren and all the other Sources no matter what the author says because both "death of the author" and "greedy fat fuck" so he's agreeing with my OCs now anyway because it's more money for him".
There is no way any of the existing characters get out of this unscathed. Vesemir was fucked over in the tv show, as were pretty much everyone. Kaer Morhen became a frat house. "Eskel", who barely even showed up in the books was somehow, suddenly important enough to include in the "not for gamers" tv show that only gamers would likely recognise in first place then killed off.
Even if the characters don't appear themselves what will happen is the new self insert OCs will face the same challenges but solve it harder, better, faster, stronger to show just how shit the OGs were.
And Regis will probably be "recast" as black since Lawrence Fishburne was cast as him for the show.
I know it's a shame as if we were back in the 1990s/early 2000s, I wouldn't have to worry about it too much.
They asked for a Batman in high school in late 90s, we got Batman Beyond, same with Superman and we got Smallville. We got the 90s Spiderman and Xmen plus later Xmen Evolution which had the better Logan.as he was more a dad than in a love triangle with Jean.
The West for the past decade at least has very rarely separated ideology and politics from the media it makes so can't be trusted with ANY franchise. Probably why WB is outsourcing a lot of it's franchises.

One of the rare few times writers followed the letter of the instructions and yet still did their own thing. Terry ended up being far better than he could have been and Bruce made it out of that series better than most would nowadays. Sure some of the later tie-in to Justice League Unlimited may not be everyone's cup of tea, the topic of just who was the father of Terry for example, but it still fit with in universe explanations and despite that plot point Terry was still his own character despite what Waller had intended.
same with Superman and we got Smallville.
I regret to admit I watched all 10 seasons of that. Well, most of them. I was skipping bits near the end but if nothing else it lasted far, far too long for a show and other series just went off the deep end by going even further like with Supernatural lasting 15 years. 7 just worked for so many things, mostly Star Trek, and after that things just fall apart too often. Stargate highlights this and while I don't mind the Ori stuff it really does come completely out of nowhere then gets resolved in significantly less time despite the magnitudes of difference in raw power between parasitic snecks and living fire gods.
later Xmen Evolution which had the better Logan.as he was more a dad than in a love triangle with Jean.
Agreed. Even with Claremont's extra panels in the original 1963 Uncanny X-Men comic that tried to flesh out Logan's obsession with Jean, pre-Rose and his actual history that didn't get written/published until House of M, the character was still always far too aggressive in that situation where Jean never showed interest in him, ever. When you bring up the points that he was born in the late 1800s and his literal rutiluphilia [redheads] that stemmed from his childhood friend/crush Rose that he later killed by accident, then every single interaction with Jean just ends up being shown in an even worse light.
If you played as Vesemir or even one of the original Master Witchers working on the Bestiary you could have a nice prequel that slots right into the trilogy.
No, this is literally the problem with post peak franchise work. Take an established character and shit all over them, in particular one who dies a heroes death fighting for his friends and family. Tv show already did this by having him try and kill Ciri so future work will be just as bad or worse.
Heart of Stone DLC at least managed to add on some minor lore points with the character and set up that missed romance Vesemir had with the old woman you meet at the auction, but I wouldn't see that stopping woketards still trying to spin some gay angle with his other life since witchers are immune to a lot of diseases therefore "monkeypox, hoe!" in their minds.
even one of the original Master Witchers
This would still get done badly since the original witchers were mutated humans that sorcs had experimented on in order to fight monsters. So it would be well within game logic and woke logic to play such a character as an oppressed human [black of course] who some sorc [who will of course be white] took as a slave then "forcefully" changed "similar" to the Yennifer story in the Netflix version despite how retarded that was since Yen chose to become a sorc and knew what she was giving up, even though the tv show still changed that part of things and flat out gave her a hysterectomy.

I'd prefer it the other way around as a reference to our creator Yakub.
Buddy, there are hundreds of years of history in the Witcher lore they could make a game with. If the devs could make a good game they'd make a good game.
Don't sperg out on me because the devs won't make a good game. Obviously a prequel with Vesemir would be good, if they made it a good game.
You don't have to write a fuckin thesis on how the devs could fuck it up. It is known.
