Ah so the lack of story consistency is the issue. That seems more a leftist issue as EVERY author needs to 'leave their mark' especially in franchises they didn't create.
It's made worse by waifu pushing as only the original authors can really get away with that, thinking of for example Anno and the Rebuild films with that character based off his wife.
It wasn't an impossible task, they just made the stupid mistake of going to South America in this expansion (and then later to North America for the technology part).
There's llamas and hot peppers and pyramids. That's it. There's no interesting story to tell - maybe there was, but if so it was lost to history when the empires fell. It's a boring continent, with shitty pan-flute music.
They have so much IP they could draw on for a new story, for instance going to Spira and fighting Sin or something like that.

Actually outright doing other worlds like that tends to be more Raid territory than main scenario, but I do acknowledge all the recurring themes they put into Eorzea's world.
Garlean Magitek looking straight out of FFVI
The Crystal Tower of III
Liberating a conquered (rather than wiped out) Doma, complete with Cyan/Kaien's theme
Going to the Moon, when the "Poster Boy" is decked out as a radiant Paladin.

Eh. The game finished it's story quite conclusively in the last expansion. They really just had an impossible task moving "forwards" from there.

And that's hardly touching the surface really.
