Tolkien has long been popular with all sorts of people, but I'm afraid at this point that so many people are essentially spiritually dead that his work simply can't be understood by a large chunk of the population. Same reason why your starting to see outright hostility to Tolkien crop up these days: one of the network talking heads called LOTR a "far-right calling card" just the other day. Seems to literally be an aversion to Truth and Beauty.
Old media was good because it resounded with Truth. Even in works of fiction, it was a reflection of the world we live in and gave us a means to better understand it.
That reflection of years gone by incites rage and terror in ugly people. They see it as a threat. And "far right" is their tool to smear their enemies. A leftist dog whistle even.
