and he's a living example of why thats bad advice : do that and you'll end up burnt out and addicted to things that temporarily allow you to not notice that you're burnt out.

This was my first major disagreement with him.
I'm a single Dad with two kids and no help. Should I pick up more burden and risk everything collapsing?
Don't sweat it. You're already carrying the highest load.
If you can't carry it, then don't pick it up. There's nothing in that bit of advice that tells you that you must break yourself.
