They want to teach men not to rape because they recognize that the only thing keeping THEM from raping people is socialization away from it, not any actual moral fiber. In this way they are morally equivalent to being a rapist. There's no moral point scored by being satisfied or placate when "lesser evil"

All that to say, I don't think he "let himself down" or "lost his way" I think he's just as depraved and evil. His failure to live up to "greater evil" is just a lack of imagination.
