Recently found the Space Trilogy of C.S. Lewis at a yard sale.

People have been telling me to buy it for a while. I know his Narnia books are more well known but how does this trilogy compare? Cant wait to read it because I love the idea of him writing sci-fi

It's great. We're basically living in that hideous strength, more so than 1984 or a brave new world.

Just understand that it's not so much sci fi as it is religious fiction. The main character is a Christ figure, not-so-subtly named Ransom.

Let's just say it never gets into my personal recommendations. Although Lensman and Barsoom are more of my cup of tea for pre 60s scifi.

I love 40s and 50s sci fi. I have some John Carter books. I’m told that Disney really did a terrible job. Heinlein was a big fan of the Barsoom stories and made reference to it in Number of the Beast. I’ll check out Lensman

I've always loved to story behind how Edgar Rice Burroughs got into writing fantasy novels. Apparently Burroughs had always been a bit of a "failure' in life, moving from on career to the next without much success. In his late thirties he decided, after reading fiction magazines, that folks were getting paid to write "such rot," and he could do better even if he had never written before. Turns out he was right.

Did you read Conan?

Yes. A couple of months ago I read the Complete Howard Conan stories and I have read the old marvel comics forever. Heard there have been some newer stories that are good

I personally found it to be rather dry and boring, but it has been a while since I've read it. As in, 30 years or so.

From what I recall, it's just basically him laying out his personal views on religion and life. There are a lot of monologs and dialogs and that sort of thing.

Oh ok. So it isn’t a sci fi story or it is views thinly disguised within sci-fi. I love his Christian books and plan to read Narnia soon.

Ever read The Screwtape Letters? Mostly passed over for some reason or other...

To this day (nearly 3 decades after I read them), I vividly recall Screwtape's letter on the "most effective" temptation. The one where he explains the best way to drag down a soul was to get them to focus on all the little things than make one unhappy: "Why can't I get a proper piece of toast," "all i want is... ," "is it so much to to ask that... ." And then allowing those minor complaints to fester and eat away at a person while they blame their family, friends, neighbors, and ultimately God for their unhappiness.

I've really got to read that again, it's a book that leaves an impression.

Yes. Read it as a kid because my mother made me but I enjoyed it. Need to do a reread. Found Mere Christianity at a yard sale today.

If you like his Christian books and Narnia, you'll like this for sure.

It's definitely drier than your average space adventure. It's hard to really explain why without getting into spoiler territory. I do think they're worth the read. They all have a very interesting and philosophical take on extraterrestrial life.

I got it a while ago but haven't had time to read much of it. I thought the first half of the first book was engaging and I'm eager to finish.
