I thought it was a bit ridiculous when I saw a suggestion of me becoming a mod but with the brigading spammers because for the most part I'm very hands off. With summer holidays right around the corner and no lifers coming out of woodwork along with us being one user away from having child porn spammed I think someone needs to step in. Otherwise potentially the whole site is going to get nuked because I've seen this behaviour before back on reddit. Whoever these brigaders really are seem to be deliberately posting gradually worse content and 'views' up to try and fuck with everyone and it's much more obvious now who it is.

I get the theory.
But how does one get selected as a candidate without applying or volunteering?
Are we instituting a lottery or a draft?
And that is the central problem of governance.
Generally, it can start by people nominating others they think would make a decent choice. I could think of a few names off the top of my head.
Something else to consider is that, if the site works the way I think it does, Dom should be able to maintain admin in the event of an emergency situation.
That actually makes sense and is an avenue I hadn't considered.
Of course, such a nomination process could be easily gamed as well.
It certainly can be. And there's always a possibility that a mole or sleeper agent could slip through the cracks, and/or that Dom could disappear and we'd be left without a failsafe.
I honestly don't know how to best tackle the whole quandary though. A good majority of the reason this community's managed to survive this well and for so long is because of the fairly hands-off approach, with fairly minimal rules and restrictions.
Unfortunately, at the same time, all it takes is one or two really motivated and persistent buggers to muck things up. And that can apply to our recent pests as well as to any potential new moderators.
Maybe before making any major changes we should see if there's any unexplored measures we can take to properly silence and/or remove those pests indefinitely. Explore options with Scored admins, or possibly some automated/scripted moderator tools if that's feasible with this site's API.
Thats how we tried doing it on c/gaming after the mod threw a fit and left. Too bad the admins completely ignored the nomination threads.
Lottery for comment removing powers. Open mod log easily accessible.
