Nope, labor in and of itself is of zero intrinsic value. For labor to have value it must be wanted, warranted and result in a positive outcome, otherwise it is inherently worthless.
As in: "I worked hard so I deserve money!"?
You are correct, Labor must be part of a value-added step.
The idea that Labor was, in and of itself, valuable is just so divorced from reality as to have never occurred to me. The value-added step is valuable, and then only insofar as it adds value. This often requires physical work.
I get what you're preaching but you're doing it in a very reductive way. Not all labor is worthless just as not all labor has value. There is always neuance.
Yup, it's reductive. Because it's the truth. Truth is simple, or else it's not true at all.
The statement "dirt has value" is a falsehood the same as saying labor has value. Are there some circumstances in which it can have value? Sure. But in and of itself, it doesn't. To say that "dirt has value" is to say that ALL dirt has value. Which would be a lie.
What leftists say when they argue for the labor theory of value is that all labor has value. Because that's the entire predicate of the theory. It's a lie.
Want an easy way to prove the theory false? I can elaborate if you'd like.
I'm game.
Here's a scenario.
You own a house. You've worked hard your whole adult life to afford this house.
One day you wake up to find a huge hole dug into your front yard, and a man demanding payment for having done so. He worked hard digging that hole all night he says, so you owe him a lot of money. What do you do?
Now the vast majority of people who answer this are not going to pay the guy, even if they can't articulate why. Most people will answer that they either call the cops or kick his ass.
And this is why. For labor to have value, it must be wanted, warranted and have a positive outcome.
You didn't want a hole in your yard. The labor was unwanted. Your yard is now essentially ruined. The labor was unwarranted. You now have to spend great time, effort or money fixing it. The labor did not have a positive outcome.
Without fulfilling all 3 of the conditions, labor is inherently devoid of value.
