[2023, Australia] "‘Rapper music’ is luring Sydney youth into a life of crime? We’ve heard this one before" "NSW police claim hip-hop is being used by criminals to recruit young people, and it has been banned from the Easter show. But this moral panic is very old news" - The Grauniad, of course. (archive.is)

Gangster culture is such propaganda. In 1995 there was a gang war in Boise Idaho. Almost everyone involved was white or Hispanic. All of the aggressors were white. I was doing anthropology of those culture when it broke out so I remember it very well. When I talk about it no one believes me.

I would say a vast amount of the rappers, from the gangsta to the modern day eras are projecting an aesthetic more than living the life. Travis Scott, someone mentioned, has two professors for parents. Do you think he grew up in a poor hood being gangster? He's a suburban poser that gets a pass because "da culture" only cares about perpetuating black stereotypes.

And I totally can believe redneck methheads are fighting it out with baby cartel wetbacks.

Here's the thing, 'street cred' was always a sham concept, it got pushed in the early 90s as a way to supplant the popular acts of the day. To counter your point Snow, a white rapper who grew up dirt poor in public housing was treated like this

Well you're talking about Idaho lol. Pretty sure black people have been killing each other in Chicago, NYC, and LA for a while unless I completely misunderstood your post. I will agree though insofar as black criminality at this scale didn't seem to exist until the later 20th century, although they have always been criminal prone obviously.

Sounds like the plot of West Side Story, to be honest…

But can you clarify your point..?

I think rap definitely contributes to the good culture, but it’s also a self-fulfilling prophecy, so…

Which part do you mean is propaganda..??

It looks like they had or have some Aryan Brotherhood and hells' Angels action, so I am not surprised there are white people involved in a gang war. To be the only aggressors seems weird.

Mexicans were involved, but they were not in charge or organizing anything.

So what was your point? That blacks aren’t more violent, or that rap culture makes them more violent/appear more violent, or that gangster culture doesn’t exist..?

I think a few of us are a bit confused…

Gangster culture is a dumb set up that aggrandizes a specific culture even though the exact things are happening well outside of those cultures.
