I don't know about all that. Both are still porn with something sometimes resembling a plot. Yaoi gets more because its smut written by women for women so they need that that contrivance to get off.
The only "gay" series that ever have any quality to them beyond just being fap material is Yuri, and that's because Japan will just slap lesbians onto anything so they need something to stand out. Heck, the recent Gushing Over Magical Girls decided to just put in real ass mindbreak BDSM in the mainstream.
lmao. there's some more drama-focused series. It's kinda old at this point, and it's heavy on the angst, but gravitation was pretty solid, with all of the...<ahem> heavy petting...offscreen.
