No freaking clue.

Is Marvel’s roster of female characters really THAT weak?

Nope. Just off the top of my head, some of the big ones; Scarlet Witch, Sue Storm, Black Cat (meow!), Gamora, Rogue/Kitty Pryde/Phoenix and plenty of other female X-Men, Black Widow, Mystique, and many more.
