I'm all for getting rid of clickbait and having guides, but 50 guides per week?
Wouldn't this qualify as....I'm not sure what the legal term but it's when an employer establishes bullshit employee output and/or cuts employee hours to put pressure on employees to quit rather than get fired.
They were apparently being told to just straight steal guides from elsewhere. So less like an actual writing of 50 guides and more like aggregating a bunch.
And if you've ever googled a specific game problem, you know the type of low effort guide they are talking about. Where they repeat the full name of the game, the problem in as many words as possible, throw in a description of the game for two paragraphs too, before giving you what an ingame tutorial already said.
So I don't think its absurd to try and force them, because I could probably steal or "copy but change a little" 15+ of those a day easy. Its more about dropping standards so low that the quantity skyrockets.
Sounds like Kotaku is in trouble. Their shift to predominantly producing 50 game tips and guides a week will be their downfall and I expect more staff to leave soon. Not what the staff want to write and not what readers expect.
Hopefully not long before the crabs get to dance on Kotaku's grave. 🦀🦀🦀
Kotaku still exists? 🤔
Not for long!
Decent Geeks and Gamers breakdown video for those listening, rather than reading.

I would say that is exactly it!
Especially since AI can rewrite guides easily and the community (I know!) would happily proofread and supply screenshots for free.
It's time for those staff to max out their healthcare and think about what they are going to do now that they are all grown up.
