I saw Dark Forces remaster last week and at a glance I’d guess they packaged up a community made modern engine with the original files, maybe running textures through some filters, and said “here you go it’s a release”. Ok, fine, but $30 come on! There are brand new games that launch at $30 with way more effort put in, several of which I’ve done the unthinkable and bought for full price.
All the youtube videos I saw on this were of the pre-release PC version meaning there was no multi-player yet, and it was so fucking stupid. Battlefront II from 2005 is already on Steam and runs fine. This is a lazy, good for nothing port.
According to the scathing reviews, the game launched with only three servers at first. They were eventually updated with more, but with stuttering and lag. The whole thing is a shitshow.
A live service game comes out -> I play it on launch day -> The inadequate servers are slammed and the game is unplayable -> I lament that gaming is dead and swear off new live service games forever -> A live service game comes out -> I play it on launch day
I’ve seen more “Mostly Negative” releases on Steam from major publishers in the last year than I think every previous year combined. They’ve lost themselves to DEI and I don’t think it comes back.
I’m not even in the camp that I would prefer this to have been a total remaster. I like when they re-release a game with only minor changes to the original graphics. A bug-fixed game with modern graphics settings, input support, and multiplayer would have been fine. I do read from the reviews though that a lot of the complaints come from multiplayer server availability. Is there a server available to run your own? I’d praise them for that just because MP would be fun again if players could run their own servers however they want.
Aside from missing content, the PC port was kind of fucked. Your reticle is significantly misaligned, to the point where it's too frustrating to play. There's supposedly a mod to fix it (and other issues) but I'm not surprised most people don't know about it.
I've had the originals for 20 years and there's plenty of tinkering to make them look and play really well.
I suppose for ease of access to someone who doesn't know much about hacking a game into shape it's a good option but why would they play a remastered game from 20 years ago unless they wanted that experience?
Remastered? It's just re-released. There's no remastering of anything, apparently they ported over the console versions back to PC, even though the original PC version is available on Steam to begin with. This entire thing is insane.

I thought this might be worth it just for ease of access, if they didn't shit it up.
But imagine my shock when ea shit it up.
Think I'll just wait for the next rimworld expansion instead.
Why don't people just buy the originals?

It's got Jabba's Palace included and some more voice acting. So that's what they are going for with remastered from what I can understand.
I don't think they ever said remastered, just re released. I guess they're honest about it, but it doesn't make it any less asinine.
Shitty Pajeet ports, welcome to the future of gaming.
