I don't think anyone feels super bad for Alec because of the snakes in his friend group.
The reason the story stays so fresh in people's mind is because of his sister's actions, the one person he didn't pick. That's what takes it from "inevitable consequence of such ideologies" to "legitimately evil in a way that hurts the soul."
That is a fair point. She effectively pulled the trigger if the stories are true that she was his last contact and damn is it a low blow for your own family to throw you under the bus like that. Though, once you're a grown ass adult, you should see the writing on the walls when you need to part ways with certain family members. It fucking sucks, but people grow estranged.

I don't know what their prior relationship was, but she did do all of this after he was dead and unable to fight back against her in any way.
So once again, its less of a "he made his bed" thing and more of a "this person is so evil it boggles the mind."
