Is that the reason there was suddenly a gigantic push to start attacking and shaming anyone who liked anime girls? Instead of telling real girls to improve their personalities, they attacked and shamed guys for liking anime girls.

Because a lot of women can't introspect and lash out when they aren't getting their way.
I mean when you look at the most popular of the anime girls, you see it ain't all skin deep like these harpies claim it is. For example, Marin Kitagawa from My dress up darling really comes to mind as why is she so popular? Yes she's very attractive but she's also very understanding, attentive, praises Gojo on his efforts and gives equally into the relationship (she works to financially help getting the resources needed to cosplay)
Then look up a hated female character, Bitch from Rising of the Shield hero, manipulative , only cares about herself and her own benefit over others, refuses to accept responsibility and sees loyalty as a waste of time.
Take a personality test as if you're more the latter than the first one, YOU'RE the problem. Men will accept average looks or even disfigurement like scars if they have all the qualities of the first example.
I saw an interesting comment on another similar topic today, that I hadn't thought about in precisely that way. When it comes to fiction, men largely want aspiration/inspiration. Women want representation. If a man sees someone better than them, they want to better themselves. Women don't want to see women better than them. Many want to see "It's Literally Me™" doing all the things they do in their boring lives.
Our rather feminized society hates things like anime girls because, unlike females in modern Western entertainment, they hold up ideals and are portrayed as something that would take effort to do. It's not all bitchy drama and putting the Patriarchy and Men in their place.
It's the basic progressive/communist mindset, where anything not of the hive is an enemy. Anime girls are not what they want modern girls to be; thus, they are the enemy and must be destroyed. It's really that simple. They're not with them, so they're against them.
Back when AI started taking off and giving us glorious visages of gorgeous women en masse, women on twitter tried to shame men's behavior by throwing out AI generated images of handsome men.
Naturally, it didn't work. But it shows how women operate mentally; they expected men to be intimidated, whereas most men who see who see stuff like that just shrug and move on with life.
Women look at beautiful women and feel intimidated. Men look at attractive men and typically go 'Nice gains, brah'. We recognized that alot of that shit takes hard work and dedication(when natty), and often respond with respect and admiration.
Whereas, if you want to see some blood in the water, throw an attractive women in a social group of 'normal' women, and watch the fur fly...
Every weirdo monster girl from dozens of animes and video games would like to know your location. Men will pick literal abominations like SCP-1471 and romanticize it into a cute stalker waifu. Women have to have reached a general level of unfathomably intolerable for this to happen to such an extent. Women have come to a spiritual/intellectual ceiling they refuse to push hard enough to break through and transform themselves into something better.

I think the reason we have so much R34 of so many things from monsters, beastmen and villains is that guys find it easier to think 'I can fix her' than MODERN WOMEN.
Hell the amount of shit I've seen of Japanese stuff from the woman from the Ring to that 8 ft ghost woman tells me guys would rather take on supernatural horrors than deal with the current dating scene..
I have definitely seen the monster girl be turned into a wonderful and lovely person worthy of adoration and respect, who is now only a monster on the outside; the snakegirl who just wants a hug, the wifwolf that wants someone to be equally loyal to her, the oni who is happy to help you do weight training and make you into a man worthy of carrying her off.
My mind boggles at the number of women men must have tried to fix or help out, only to be bitten by them and think to themselves "what a waste of time, I'll never try that again." I know I have one of those personalities that attracts the daddy-issues women and I've tried being their therapist and getting them to fix their shit, but it never takes. Most weren't even ones I was in a relationship with, just nearby at the time; co-workers, neighbors, sister of friends, etc. Gimme the manticore any day, I like my odds with that one better.
