I was rewatching Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero today and it had me dead laughing that Bulma canonically uses the Dragon Balls to wish for BBL and other vain nonsense like that.

Oh dear, bringing up anime 'comedy' don't get me wrong, some writer's are clever and have some genuinely funny moments. Frieren recently got some laughs out of me just with her derpy behaviour but they didn't overuse that as part of a constant gag and made it a real part of her personality.
I don't know whether it's lost in translation or the Japanese sense of humour seems to be stuck in their weird 90's Tenchi Universe slapstick writing which is incredibly cringe. I just don't find it all that funny, I especially hate the gags they frequently use and you can often tell when an anime is really crap aside from the animation quality if it's relying on extremely old comedy tropes and the trend just won't fucking die.
. Nose bleeds to replace erections ( For the love of god please stop it Japan )
. A character sneezing when they get talked about, they always use this cringe cutaway
. The stumble in on a girl scene because she left the door unlocked, I actually respect the anime that mock this by having the man knock first
. Panty shots, yes I know it's an unintentionally hilarious meme but when they use this as a gag it's lame
. Hot springs/Baths, yes we know you love them Japan, you don't need to remind us every five seconds and use it as an excuse to have your slideshow of waifus for an entire episode and obligatory protagonist pervert moment
. 'Clumsy' characters, this one is a mix for me, if it's written and storyboarded properly it can be funny, but most of the time they just force a clumsy character in and the setup is terrible
I respect the anime that do away with the tropes though, now I think about it Konosuba was fucking hilarious precisely because it did for the most part buck the trends and like a lot of people I did like how the protagonist was somebody who would not put up with women's bullshit.
Most of those aren't unfunny because they're unfunny, they're unfunny because they're overused. Also, plenty aren't even supposed to be funny; you're basically just hating on tropes in general for being overused, not comedy.
That said, I agree with you to some extent; I personally don't find a lot of anime comedy that funny. The stuff I do has me rolling, though...but it's few and far between...
Haha, exactly. The anime I tend to find most hilarious is the anime that pokes fun at those very same overused tropes. There's things like KonoSuba and Overly Cautious Hero that are mainly funny if you've already seen a fair bit of others in the genre.
This one is often alright, in my opinion. Kind of funny/silly exactly because it's so overplayed. Kind of self referential in my opinion. Also takes basically a second or two, so no real loss either way.
Man, and I know this goes against what I said earlier a bit, but this one pisses me off because it's so overused and almost always out of place. I agree that the subversion can be funny, though. I've seen a few where, "for equality" for seeing the women undressed, the stumbling dude starts stripping. Obviously does not go well. There's also a version where he says 'I know I'll get beat for this so might as well keep looking.' Couldn't find that, but found this clip from the same anime.
Again, not even necessarily funny, just often used.
I would argue that all of those overused scenes he mentioned are intentional and meant to be "funny" in the self-referential way you explained...
The Planners/Animators know what they are doing and are anime superfans themselves.
I get that argument but at the same time it tells you something about their writing if that's all they've got across the board. I find it really refreshing for example when they've got a male protagonist that isn't useless and a cringey pathetic guy who's incapable of making a move on a girl. Most men are not like that in any capacity, this is why I like Isekai Nonbiri so much because the interactions he had between the girls was fairly normal. Then there's Shin no Nakama where he actually get's a real girlfriend instead of this endless back and forth for the sake of drawing out the plot and doing gags.
I don't care how much I'm downvoted I will attack those tropes and support anime creators that do something different lol.
Oh, also, check out Combatants Will Be Dispatched! if you haven't already. Same author as KonoSuba; not as good in my opinion, but similar comedy style as I recall.
Oh yes I remember that one, already watched it, it wasn't bad.
