Just watched EVS reviews for Isom 1 and 2, they're just not good, not even mediocre
posted 2 years ago by ParadigmShift2070 2 years ago by ParadigmShift2070 +32 / -0

The whole thing is just so soulless, the project succeeded because Eric July is black and the "counter culture" crowd desperately wanted to prove that they're not racist.

That tracks with most of the comments on readcomicsonline, and nobody there has any financial motivation when reviewing things considering the nature of the site. In fact from what I remember there was a troll making the same immature comments in every issue about one of the names of someone involved and said troll was being called out for it by those who were also criticising the comic.

It just doesn't seem to be a good story, or have art that's enjoyed.

Some examples taken from the main page and both issues.

Overall thoughts by some posted on the main page of the comic.

This comic did well for what is and its niche fanbase but let's not oversell the comic or July himself. It's nowhere close to being the "revolutionary comic to rival Marvel and DC", it's simply a comic that's just as mediocre as the comics Marvel and DC are releasing. Like many casual comic readers don't even know this comic exists.

1). This is a comic piracy site, having comics here for free, that's the whole point. 2). The hate boner, that some people have for Eric July was amusing at first, but now borders on disturbing. Some of these people need some serious professional help, judging on how they go off online, because of a mediocre superhero comic, produced by a Youtube guy, of all things! 3). The book itself is ''mid'', like the hip kids say. Nothing groundbreaking that will change comics or something, but still better than some of the embarrassing crap that US mainstream companies churn out. I've definitely read way, way worse here. ( Check out the ending of the latest Punisher run, that was some absolutely embarrassingly bad shit.) 4). If people want to pay for this, it´s their money, let them. I´m definitely not gonna pay 35 $ for this, just like I won´t pay Marvel or DC any money for some of that insultingly bad shit that they´re releasing.

In reply to this:

i'm not sure whats funnier, the hateboner people have for July doing his own thing outside of the big companies, or the hateboner he has for anyone who criticizes his book. At the end of the day if he's producing a product and people want to read it, good for him. so much from the big guys is crap, so someone else might as well produce crap too.

And in reply to this:

After reading issue 2, his comic reminds me of the schlock that Zenescope produces , minus the sexy pin-up characters. Hey, now that´s idea for future Rippaverse titles: Moar pin-up boobies! It´s really baffling, that people would lose their minds because of something like this. Oh and July is a grifter who knows exactly what his doing, when he´s starting these flame wars online. People, talking about you it´s good for business, even if they´re trashtalking on you. Makes you consider, the sorry state of the US comics industry, when the most talked publication is some 2nd tier schlock from some Youtuber, while the Big 2 are producing stuff, that´s so embarrassingly bad, it´s not even worth pirating....

Other comments:

It's not even mid. The main character is an absolute man baby.

Avery Silman is a man baby. Seriously. What did I just read? The main character starts fighting with the nightclub guy and his goons because "I was met with disrespect and this cannot stand"? So the "hero" has a massive ego that he can't keep in check, so he just starts brawling with some goons. How heroic and inspiring. Not. A sane, rational person would simply move on and get over it. So Avery Silman isn't just a man baby, he's also irrational and bordering needing a stay in the loony bin. How is this better than the trash Marvel and DC serve these days? It's not.

Issue 1 comments.

not a bad read and it strached the itch marvel and dc left [highest voted]

this was was actually much better than I thought it would be. I'm honestly inclined to buy the books now so that this can continue. Shipping fee will kill me though, I just know it.

well...it's kinda good...it's strange the number of pages

Meh...it was about what I expected. Art is okay...not good, but it's not the worst. Probably put it on par with books I've read from places like Zenoscope, Dynamite, IDW, etc. Story is using the well worn trope of "guy doing a favor finds he's stumbled into something bigger than expected", but that's not always a bad thing. There's a reason it's become a trope..it works Biggest issue is that July is clearly very new to writing comics. Some of the dialogue is stilted or just downright awkward (ex: during that last fight with the super powered bouncer). There's also some interlude scenes that just don't fit, which I think is a result of him trying to do too much world building all at once. Sometimes less is just more...both with dialogue and story Honestly, there could be something here, the world seems like it does have some potential, but I personally wouldn't have dropped $35.00 on it.

Damn, that was pretty good. Think i'll order this one and whatever else is out, just wanted a test ride because it was on the pricey side.

Not bad, not bad at all for a first issue. I don't know if its worth the 30$ bucks though. Would like some more world building and explanation behind the super powers going forward but I'm interested in issue 2.

The costume on the promotional images seemed very (too) generic to me and now that I'd read the comic, well the story is likewise generic. Imho the story tastes like french fries without salt. One big mistake is trying to build an entire universe of different potential future titles in a single issue: is impossible because i something to do step by step over the time. Still he tried to do that by throwing in the story too many superpowered characters without any consistent introduction, only to disappear just after some briefly "screentime". I mean the panel saying "Yaira will return.... soon enough" made me think "why I should care about this character to return? The comic told me nothing at all about her for me to care about".

This is aggressively mid to bad. The art is okay (Though sometimes the figures look too stiff), nothing interesting to look at but not egregious. The writing is bad and the characters are kinda unlikable. Its paced fine but the actual panel flow is bland, stock, and uninspiring. Like its boring. It should get better perhaps but this is just boring and the writing is bad. Aggressively mid.

tl;dr the single biggest criticism is the price, with varying reviews in terms of story and art.

Issue 2 comments.

[A sharp decline from the mostly positive comments in issue 1]

embarassingly bad. i wish more of these weirdos' crowdfunded comics got uploaded, it's hilarious to see the crap few hundreds of idiots are massively overpaying "to own the wokes" . what an easy grift

I came here to say, after reading the first two issues, after hearing all of the hype about how "oh wow, this is the only non-woke superhero comic", this comic is just boring to me. I've seen better comics that managed to hook me in on issue one, this comic is not groundbreaking

I would not said that this is bad, but little bit predictable that feels like it from 1995-2003 era. Luke Cage blames himself that Black Hulk randomly killed White woman...is it really was so important in story? i mean to kill white woman, remorse story flash back at... 2nd episode, wuf, if guy not sure how his powers works... maybe he should Team-up with other heroes or use a weapon, or he has some army/cop/boxer/firefighter background, flashback would be were much needed. Then he meets two wendigos that burn when touching him, so our MC saint or god's person or fused with sacred relic? Then he meets Elisa Bloodstone, that just a Sydnee now, then whole wendigos cave, big bad "We must eliminate him, we don't wonna burn each time we randomly touch some superhero" ... likewise of this wendigos meeting anyone other? or they just live in same district?

Black man confronts people and fights them part two. This is one of the most generic comics ever I've read. Bland character designs and slow pace for a book released yearly. I think a lot of people are buying this out of spite and hype because this isn't any better than the junk Marvel and DC produce.

tl;dr the comic feels to generic and "90s" bland.
