I'll name 2 games, both curiously from 2001.

Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns -- This was an "Age of Empires" + "Civilization" type game with several unique twists, such as controlling companies of soldiers instead of individuals, a clever resource system, and a fantasy theme that probably helped make it forgettable to most gamers today. It and its successor were terribly addictive for me.

Throne of Darkness -- Another game with unique twists on popular games and genres of the time. Like Kohan, Throne of Darkness was a much better game than it's remembered for today (if it's remembered at all). This is a Diablo 2 style game, except you'd control several samurai in various "formations" to eventually fight your way through medieval Japan to defeat the Dark Warlord of Yamato. It was a finicky but engrossing game for anyone dedicated enough to get it all figured out.

Oh shit, I made sure to go back and grab a copy of Kohan II just last year for my nostalgia archive. Solid game, loved how much of a slow push-pull the combats could be, especially the sieges.
