I see the “pensions” bit a lot, and I think it’s valid, but Chauvin really changed the calculus for police officers. It’s one thing to screw up and lose your job, but cops who engage with a black criminal after 2020 are literally rolling the dice with their own freedom. Things can easily escalate beyond their control, and doing everything by the book is no guarantee that they won’t end up in prison for life (or until they get stabbed to death by an inmate). I can’t fathom having that kind of job. Judging by the retirement numbers, most cops couldn’t fathom it either.
