I use discord for some group parties with a couple friends in a game I play. There's a few channels I follow because they update regularly with some relevant information, but I only spend a few minutes at a time in any of them; only as long as it takes me to make use of the information I want. All in all, it's convenient, it's easily accessible, has wide-enough appeal that good-sized communities are formed to research information, and has a decent enough interface.
When I use it, I generally don't write down anything in the chat bar, and I don't bother censoring myself at all with voice chat. I've never had to deal with a moderator of any kind. I don't use it for political matters, and neither myself nor anyone else I play with bring them up when clearing content.
So all in all, I have very little reason to not use discord. It's a tool, and one that I employ for very specific usages. I don't expect to be bothered by anyone anytime soon, either.
It's free. And since you can make your own chat groups, who the fuck cares if you get banned from TranniesForTrump or whatever? Oh no, some random community you'd never interact with anyways... banned you! The horror. I'll just stick around my private discord groups with personal friends and use it as a glorified ICQ client.
Why do people prefer to use discord?
They seem to have a long history of stasi like censorship
Normies want zero understanding of tech and do not care about censorship or are aware of it.
It combined Ventrilo and an IM client in a single package and every other IM service except ICQ has shut down.
