If our government is powerful, they wouldn't dare nuke us. If our government isn't, they don't need to bother, like you said. Again, my point isn't that those other countries are good - they're not, and that's actually the main point in this essay that I agree with - just that I don't think our government protects us, weak or strong.
Besides, in the case of Iran, they mostly hate us because of our fucked up government. And Russia and China see our government as rivals. They don't like our government, they don't care about the people one way or the other. They don't care about wiping us out nearly as strongly as our own government seems to.
Not convinced Russia has it in them to fight Muslims. Besides the fact that almost all their allies in Asia are Muslim countries, they have this idea of Russia being a melting pot federation. They pander to white nationalism now but the demographic changes are inevitable and it's not going to be a white country forever.
China on the other hand have showed they won't let the Muslims have an inch. They've got the brutality, but I'd worry about their competency if they had to fight an actually effective insurgency.
The Chinese are in the same position as the European armies of the 17th/18th centuries vis a vis wild injuns, or the American army vs VC when it comes to facing the American redneck.
