Those smallish car charger batteries, and portable, flexible solar panels would be a must if you want power. You might not have much, but a couple thousand watts is better than none when you need it. And I mean the kind of stuff you get at whatever your equivalent of Canadian Tire is.
Big problem with hydro is that with traditional big-wheel power systems, you can't really turn the system off quickly in an emergency. Micro-hydro is awesome, but touchy about water levels.
Gasification + solar is the route I'm slowly working down.
I do in spare time look at more off the grid living, my issue is power production sustainably without requiring fuel and the like.
Basically, anywhere near water especially rivers are a GOLDMINE if you want that just for yourself. Solar and wind too dependant on conditions.
