It's a self-fulfilling prophecy unfortunately, I know for a fact that if I post videos up of gameplay etc. they're going to do better in terms of attracting people if they're a minute long if that than something that's that's 15 minutes long etc. because they'll look at the duration first and go "Nope". It's just a recorded fact now that's how the internet and most content works, also will be partly why television is dying so hard. The younger generations especially aren't going to sit through 10 minutes of ads to get through a 30 minute episode.
Now, when it comes to retention? That's way more debatable, because you do see that there are channels which have 15+ duration on their videos and they're doing better and better over the long term because they have interesting content. You even see as well people commenting they sometimes rewatch videos and come back.
It varies enormously, I think because of how new social media and this type of content creation is relatively creators are still kind of finding their feet on what works, I know I am. I never would have thought though you could have the potential to make money just on incredibly short videos of all things.
The fault as always lies with content creators who stretch the most minor commentary into ages of ponderous useless bullshit.
The Quartering is king of this. The entire content of most videos being at most 3 sentences, but they have to stretch to that 10 minutes.
It means that i develop a strategy to save myself time, and the heuristic i end up with is that the first third and last third of every video is pointless bullshit. I can waste 15 seconds each side to get 30 seconds of content. I'm not wasting 10 minutes each side to get 10 minutes of content. Fuck off.
The well is poisoned. Too bad.
Not to mention half of "content creators" are charisma-less sacks of shit with whiny nasally voices that make me what to spew.
The people who are actually compelling earn their hour of content which I will listen to cover to cover, everybody else is just a dumbass with a microphone.
LOL well that's just classic over-saturation isn't it? I do get the frustration though because I've gotten that way with content creators as well even the ones I generally like and don't have a problem with. I've mentioned this before but the smart ones are having introspection moments and are trying out new content to see what sticks, which, good on them really for realising. The cringe and stubborn ones are relying on the same old re-hashed 2016 era content when really a video commenter or any one of us could post the exact same takes without it being 15 minutes long.
I mean sadly, that Callum Upton response video I just posted is a classic example and he's really just rambling on about the same thing for the majority of the video. Could have just spend two minutes at most, but no got to hit that 10 - 15 minute mark. Happens with a lot of content creators and you see people mentioning it in the comments.

How so? I'd never fault the ones that make an offer. The fault lies with the people taking that offer. Obviously there's enough idiots that watch that shit. Quartering et al. would be idiots if they changed their ways.
I mean I avoid a ton of long videos too. It's quality of content though. Like even things I agree with, some of the autist videos posted on here tend to ramble badly. Like an hour of video "Joe Biden is bad. Bad, Joe Biden is. The President is bad. Did I say Joe Biden is bad?" Like it's an hour of going on and on without adding much additional knowledge to make me interested. Gaming stuff is tough. If it's a new game I'm likely to skip around, look for gameplay, see it, and bail. I came into that video wanting to see gameplay though. Im generally not interested if you like the game, unless ive watched you enough to know we share interests. If I'm learning about an old system, how a game was made, etc. I'll stick around way too long.
Compare with somebody like Razorfist, not a word wasted, every sentence is compelling and is a different piece of information, and the videos are done with when he's talk talking.
It's the same phenomenon as everywhere else "wahhh wahhh where's the viewership going whyyyyy" yeah its disappearing because you're garbage.

And why?

I didn't watch it :p

Because they ruined the ability of viewers to trust them? Lol
My comment isn't hard to understand.
But they haven't. They're still around and arguably succesfull, despite doing the thing you say (and I agree) is offputting.
