I'd actually say it's an inherent part of Identity Politics because it is innately polarizing. But the harder you try to play identity politics, the more inherent the blowback and polarization will be.
They could just, you know, shut the fuck up and build a strong local community rather than screeching about the importance of the intertemporal abstraction they're polarizing everyone about. That would do more for the people encapsulated by that intertemporal abstraction... but it would leave the idiots, bureaucrats, zealots, and grifters out of work... so we just can't do that!
The irony of you saying this, especially in response to what I just said, is so palpable I literally laughed.

Race and ethnicity aren't in themselves "abstractions," but imposing a political system on tribes requires treating them as such. Or at least this appears to be the case.
Race is, ethnicity isn't. Don't conflate the two.
