Technically, in Yanky-land, it's supposed to be a Democratic Republic, but that doesn't really change anything because your point still stands; and the worst of the voter bloc can still be persuaded to vote against their own best long-term interests.
I'm not sure that's the problem as opposed to all the propaganda in favor of shitty leftist ideas. No one cared about any of their shitty $CURRENT_YEAR issues if you go back far enough.
