It is hard to shoot a target, let alone a moving human, but considering the volume of rounds, you think they would at least hit someone.
Unless it is more of a "look how strong we are, be afraid" performance, like two primitive tribes screaming insults and throwing rocks at each other from opposite sides of a river, both groups knowing that the chances of actual bloodshed are slim as they are relatively safe but feeling compelled to make an effort anyway.
