So based on the selections that were suggested it seemed like doing one exceptional movie versus a Hollywood turd was the popular look. So I’ve paired up the movies to be as themed as possible as a good versus godawful comparison.
-
Jurassic Park versus Godzilla (1998)
-
Jaws versus Deep Blue Sea
-
Top Gun versus Pearl Harbor
-
War Games versus Hackers

I am genuinely concerned to see Deep Blue Sea and Hackers included under 'turds.'
I actually like Hackers more than I like Wargames. I acknowledge it ought to by all rights be a bad film, but it somehow manages to transcend its flaws to become good.
But I just saw Hackers the other day, so I don't know that I want to watch it yet again.
I honestly picked it because it was a box office flop compared to wargames, nothing against the movie in particular as I haven’t actually seen it, which also made me pick it as people will more likely show up for a movie they haven’t seen. Case and point being the viewers and activity we had for A Fistful Of Dollars and A Few Dollars Move over The Good, The Bad, And The Ugly. Think of me as a poor man’s AI trying to figure out upvote appeal versus genuine activity when the movie shows.
I'm just busting balls a bit. I tend to get into a bit of a rut with what movies I watch, so I like some variety. I'm probably not going to seriously complain about very many films.
And FWIW, my drop off on the prior movie night was because IRL stuff started to get in the way, not because I didn't want to watch the movies.
Not an issue, everyone has their own schedules and lives, it’s more so like any algorithms, I can see viewership and chat activity and want to cultivate it to our community audience.
Yeah they were nice. But in fairness Ally Sheedy was pretty nice (probably nicer albeit no boobs) eyecandy too.
But I think Hackers is more of a computer fantasy movie, whereas Wargames is a bit more realistic. But that lack of realism is what gives Hackers a certain timelessness. You watch it and wish that's what fucking around with computers was instead of the boring activity it actually is.
Agreed. Many such cases. Sad!
I picked deep blue sea because of upvotes for a turd and hacker’s because it was a box office flop while being similar enough to war games. Don’t think of them as specific failures but failures in either box office or appeal.
Side note: I left Super Mario Bros in the Tartarus pit because seriously fuck that movie. Frailty was a good choice but couldn’t think of a proper dud to pair with. I also don’t want to do The Flash because the last thing I need is to have my eyes burn through my skull like when the nazis opened the ark of the covenant
Also because of frailty I think we need to have a Christian versus faux Christian theme if we can keep the movie club going forward again, in an attempt to continue generating appeal it would seem that a weekly duo might be better than a monthly theme. But as I said earlier I am a poor man’s AI trying to create the most interactivity for our humble community.
I remember watching Frailty around when it came out because a HS friend was obsessed with it, and it was good if my 20 year old memory is to be trusted.
That said, early 2000's movies about Christianity or with Christian themes are tricky because some (most?) of them in retrospect were trying to paint the Evangelical George W. Bush supporters of the day (who the Hollywood sort of the time considered a major threat to their socio-political supremacy) as a bunch of crazy weirdos.
So it's one of those things where you have to watch those films with the benefit of 20 years' hindsight of what the now obvious play was.

1A-C (no strong preference on America time as a West Coaster)
Is “west-coaster” a slur yet?
I don't know. "Californian" is. "Oregonian" and "Washingtonian" might be if you're in Idaho or Montana.
Only a matter of time I suppose. And to be fair those places are right to be distrustful of us.
Oh Californian has been a hilarious slur to military guys like me that were stationed on the west coast. Nothing is as “culturally” eye opening as a midwesterner (me) seeing a black female Mandingo fight on a trolly while a bum pisses in a corner.
Yeah probably funny in the moment, until you realize that's going to be your hometown in 20 years.
Watching home movies from the 80s and observing the racial composition then compared to what it is in that same town today was a real eye opener and basically on the spot made me an unwilling "demographics is destiny" race realist.
Stickied for community activities!
How dare you be a good mod

Upvoted for the first official voter, thank you
My vote would be 1b, but as far as euro times go I will keep them in a separate category entirely to be fair to our lesser (but possibly equal, maybe) separate category. Which does mean more work on my end but I feel is worth it for the effort for the people that want either a different selection for the time slot as that seems to be the most fair system.
I will fight anyone who called Hackers a "turd". War Games is also great.
