Having grown up around them, I believe its both. Many very young ones will react violently because they are expected to. They know they have to, because they watch grown ones do it and internalize that its supposed to hurt somehow which in turn creates the necessary chain before they can conceptualize why. Once they are adults, they have lost the necessary emotional depth to be "hurt" by it through years of violence and desensitization, so instead it becomes entirely put on to allow them to do some hoodrat shit like looting.
