Tiktok is trash. But when are you also going to ban all the other sites that are also trash and subversive against Americans? This also looks like a trojan horse for the government to take over social media (even more than it already has)
This also looks like a trojan horse for the government to take over...
It always is. More government control is rarely the answer, especially on vague stuff like this. Social media is a plague, but giving the government power over the content we can choose to consume is a terrible idea.
Same goes for ID laws, such as the recent porn-stuff. Porn is bad, and I don't want kids watching it. I also think it's a terrible idea to have sections of the internet where the government can require your identity to access.
It's all a very slippery slope to losing what's left of our free speech. If the government can ban TikTok, can they ban "Nazi" sites, for example? And who decides what is a "Nazi?" If the government can require identification for porn, can they do so for gun sites, for example? And what if they succeed in raising the ages, or something? You're looking at the government blocking adults from viewing gun-related content, in not too many slippery steps.
It's an absolutely terrible idea to give the government even more power over the internet.
Also they don't 'ban' anything they get these web addresses blacklisted by IP address and you can get around it in five seconds which the zoomers if they have any brains will already have done. If they do get around them what exactly is the penalty? If they catch Montana users are they actually going to go kicking down the doors of some teen twerking online?
This is just a cringe right wing virtue signal that doesn't do anything much like with them thinking they've banned pornhub. Tech illiterate boomers trying to regulate the internet is just silly and they can fuck off.
