/d/ is a 4chan board I assume? I don't know anything about that. What I can tell you is that when I started using the internet you had to search for whatever you wanted. I never came across any really weird shit back then because it would have never crossed my mind to search for that and algorithms that deliberately lead to that content were still a decade away.
for me it was always a matter of time. The more time you spend on the internet, the more likely you were to run into the weird shit. for reasonably social kids and teenagers, this was never a big deal.
for socially awkward and self-isolated kids, running into the weird shit was an inevitability.
I was that socially awkward and self-isolated kid. But then again I didn't have access to my own internet connected computer until I was 18, so the amount of porn I could consume was limited by the amount of time that I was home alone. It was probably a blessing in disguise.
absolutely was.
To offer a diametric argument. Back in the day there were far less sites to begin with, meaning it was easier to just stumble upon fucked up shit the moment you walked out of certain lanes. One of my buddies found Asian Scat Porn on AOL by sheer accident trying to find flash games.
So while you weren't being deliberately lead to fucked shit, you were also not being protected from it at times too.
I feel like porn is more centralized now than it was back then. It seems to have followed the same process of discussion boards. Maybe I'm misremembering because it's been so long but I remember googling whatever I wanted and being led to a variety of sites. Now most of it is aggregated onto a small number of huge sites. It's like how discussion forums gave way to sites like Faggit on other huge social media companies.
You aren't wrong, I was simply offering the differing perspective that you could still find wierd shit without intentionally searching for it back in the day, it was just more accidental. Which meant that without that centralizing factor keeping you from searching the Wild West chaos, you could just stumble on all sorts of shit.
I'm not saying its better or worse, only that the problem has always been there just in another form.
Even if that were true I still wouldn't ever let my friend live that down and any time it was brought up, which would be often, the retelling would heavily suggest it wasn't an accident.
Come to think of it, this actually happens with someone I know where "japscat" is brought up for this very reason. It's amusing watching how easy it is winding the guy up about it.
