Before you think I'm a weirdo, it came up in an argument recently as to whether Trump was paying for Twitter even though he hadn't used it since being unbanned. It was just today his blue checkmark no longer shows up.
Personally, I just found out today about "Twitter Legacy" and "Twitter Blue" (the former being the free checkmark), but I always suspected that lots of these people weren't paying for their blue checkmarks.
Fun fact: Trump's account lost verification, but Obama's account still has it. I don't believe for one second that Obama paid for Twitter Blue.
