"Sustaining a writing career has become almost untenable for a large percentage of our members. We're just at a breaking point."
Life is SOOOO hard for us! Why can't we get paid millions!
The WGA is demanding, among other things, an increase in minimum pay, more residual payments from streaming, as well as increased contributions to its health and pension plans.
The fuck would the writers be getting residual payments from streaming? Sell your work and that is the end of it.
"One out of every four people who runs the television shows that everyone's obsessed with make the lowest amount of money the contract allows,"
You sign these fucking contracts dumbass. That is what a contract is, an agreement to get paid a certain amount for your work.
I've been in meetings the last few weeks where writers talked about the fact that while they're writing the television shows that you and everyone watch, they had to take second jobs in order to make ends meet."
Maybe don't live in California and spend your money mindlessly.
These assholes agree to their contracts then cry about how the contracts aren't good enough a few years later. All while their quality drops further and further.
Also, very presumptuous to say “you and everyone else” watch their shows. Never mind that the proliferation of streaming means there are now exceedingly few universally consumed programs anymore. It’s just a super arrogant thing to say even if your show is one of those few.
The fact that the word is plural explains why you don't get paid shit and why increased residuals won't fuckin matter. You and your two dozen buddies writing the show will have to split the pie you morons.
Maybe we should cut back on the number of writers per show. Maybe then a show will have a consistent tone and suck.
Sure, they're a dime a dozen at major production houses and so they get paid pennies.
But we're living in a world where a writer can literally pick up an animation team anywhere in the world and have their story produced, then sell it themselves.
They need studios as little as any script writer has ever needed them.
If they have good stories, they should have no problems.

Entitled cunts the lot of them.

Yeah for every writer of genuinely good shows there's a room full of people writing shit like 'Velma.'
They are not supposed to get paid the same.

Consider the modern landscape for writers.
