Really sorry to hear that man. It is just so damn alien to me. How the hell does someone even get like that? I am pretty damn opinionated but I just couldn't imagine tossing away such an old friend for something so trivial.
That's the problem, what we regard as a trivial difference, other people have decided they will die on a hill for. Meanwhile they regard basic rights like freedom of speech trivial in pursuit of that, priorities have been completely flipped on their heads.
This one is actually pretty dumb and it was a discord group I thought I was starting to get pretty chill with but it just shows you we're not alone in encountering this behaviour. I'm a programmer and I keep a close eye on what the games industry is doing generally. People I was chatting to who had been absolutely fine with me before were going on about randoms being shitty people in text and voice chat and they were expecting companies to go and deal with it.
Me, being a programmer and actually knowing what I'm talking about laid out that in order for them to deal with randoms would require the chat either being shut down entirely. Or alternatively having some kind of hyper modded service you pay separately for with 24 hour staffing and monitoring to keep the chat 'clean' by the standards that they were looking for. That was just the reality of the situation because it would cost so much for what they wanted.
For some bizarre reason, they took this to mean that I supported the behaviour the randoms were doing in these chats. Completely out of fucking nowhere, after they messaged that and clearly meant it and they were going to make me defend the viewpoint they made up about me I just went and left and never talked to them again.
I will put up with a lot of bullshit online but one thing I refuse to do is deal with people who think it's okay to make things up about me and then try to force me to defend myself on their bullshit.
The funniest part about this is Blizzard came along with Overwatch 2 and low and behold 24 hour monitoring of VOIP being dumped in as transcripts for modding purposes. So not only was I fucking dead on about stating the realities of chat as a theory the corporations are now implementing that and you also know for a fact there's going to be regulations regarding online chats in gaming because of muh 'white supremacists and incels'.
What's so fascinating about these types of people isn't necessarily that they do this, it's the fact that 9 times out of 10 their friends meet you round the back and confirm yes it's not just you being crazy with some of them leaving and getting fed up of the situation as well. They drive away everyone around them and then wonder why they're alone because they have zero capability for self-reflection. It's pretty sad when they seemed like normal and fun people to be around with before and would still be if they didn't sperg out over peoples' opinions.
