I guarantee she was given that money as some sort of bullshit teenage black girl grant and the author doesn't want people to know that.
Not out of the question though, if expenses were low. Living at her parents, working full time, that's doable. That's only $6,000 in savings a year.
The monetary aspect does raise some questions, but certainly isn't my main concern with this story.
