I'm in my 30s. I go to the gym 4-5 times a week and I golf outside in the summer. I'm still depressed. They aren't magical cures.
Something often neglected by the "work out to get a date" crew is that as you yourself improve, your standards will increase. To think about it on the extreme, if you were 300 pounds and struggling to attract other 300 pound women because those 300 pound women felt they deserved Chad, so you hit the gym and became 200 pounds of muscle, you no longer care about the 300 pound fat chicks. You now want the skinny gym girls because if you're willing to devote 10 hours a week to self improvement, you're going to want a woman who puts the same amount of effort in for herself. You won't be attracted to lazy fat slobs anymore. The competition for these attractive women is even steeper than it was for 300 pound women when you were 300 pounds yourself. Becoming fit and healthy as a guy doesn't necessarily make the game any easier, it just changes the game. That's why you should really only workout for yourself not for women.
A significant amount of money on the other hand will make the game easier but there's no guaranteed way to make enough of it.

Is there any reason? Because by your self-description, there really is no reason to be depressed.
On a biological level lack of a partner means you failed at life and that's plenty of reason to be depressed.
Sure, but that generally doesn't cause people to become depressed, and he seemed to be at peace with it. So I find it rather strange.
