I have a theory that when you look at any word your brain recalls all of the words that look similar and then the one that fits best rises to the top and is that one you consciously read.
So when they used "tranny" for themselves they'd also read and think "tyranny" at some level and this affects their mentality because they're in some part identifying as tyranny. Same way there's more Dentists named Dennis.
