I wish I could find again an article I read from the old War on Terror days, quoting a guy who survived a suicide bombing of a minor target, some small arms depot or something. The terrorists had a guy drive a truck rigged with explosives into the target building and blow up. The guy being interviewed recalled being able to briefly see the driver’s face as he approached and he said the guy just looked so downcast and disappointed. The survivor speculated the driver probably came from the West all excited to join (the Taliban in this case I think) and fight for the glory of Allah, and his military masters assigned him to kill himself in a minor raid on a minor target of no lasting importance. That’s what gets me about these guys who go back. They get admitted to a vastly superior country as far as services and quality of life go, but they can’t just enjoy it, they get mad over some little thing and they want to go back and fight for the homeland, and they get the death-equivalent of “this lousy t-shirt.” I’ve got no sympathy at all.
