Saying that, I'm trying to thing of ANY group they wouldn't backstab to get ahead.

I'm drawing a blank there, in history, these are the guys you put in the front:

So they can't stab you to save their skin
So if they die in an arrow barrage, no loss and you keep the loyal useful ones safe.
