Why do black people not celebrate their own literature and history, rather than copying others? (www.youtube.com)

For some they are too lazy and for others it’s much easier to appropriate someone else’s culture. I love the LOTR books and I have enough respect for it not to bastardize it. Same with other things. Why some people feel that other works by someone else has to represent them is beyond me. Well I have my theories.

But I would say to get people out of the mindset that they have to be represented in anything and that you can enjoy works of different cultures but they don’t have to change for you. Also force artists to make their own stuff and stop this mindset that if something is majority white it needs to be changed. In a majority white country I’d expect to see a lot of whites in entertainment and literature

For people who aren't black or white, this is so normal that it's not even a mindset they need to get out of. You have to be taught that any work that doesn't have people of your color is like genociding you and such as?

Yes, this goes across the board but these studios will put their black actors like the ones in rings of power to push this narrative but I would tell someone of any race this lesson. I read Beowulf in school and loved it. Never once complained that it didn’t represent me. But like you said this should be common sense

I would tell someone of any race this lesson.

I mean that for most people in the world, this is something that goes without saying. I couldn't name you the last game, show or movie that 'represented' my race, and it's no issue for me at all. In fact, the whole thing is rather absurd to me.

I read Beowulf in school and loved it. Never once complained that it didn’t represent me. But like you said this should be common sense

Feminists don't complain though, because Grendel's mother is quite the excellent representation of a feminist: raise a monster, then blame the monster's victims for its actions.

Kidding aside, I think works like Grendel represent everyone. Because it's not about race.

But it used to not be a big deal until fairly recently when “representation” was all they talked about
