Last night I finished a reread of the original expanded universe Thrawn Trilogy. As I've mentioned before, I cancelled Disney Plus and when I'm asked if I am a Star Wars fan I specify I'm a pre-Disney fan. I heard that Disney Plus is going to do an Heir to the Empire movie (obviously bastardized) and it made me want to read that trilogy again since I hadn't read it in years. Heir to the Empire will always be special to me because I got it for my 12th birthday in 92 and I had no idea there were books that continued the story. Since then I have amassed a lot of EU books/comic books and still have many to go. My only regret is that I couldn't find the original covers so I had to buy the disney re-releases. I know there are some who say that shows Disney that there is interest in the EU but I doubt they care.
I would like your opinion on the following:
I always thought that it was a dumb move to totally get rid of the EU. I think Disney could've had their own canon while continuing the EU canon since there was a ready fan base. Another thing they could've done would've been to do animated adaptations of some of the EU stories like Old Republic, Solo Trilogy, Thrawn Trilogy, etc.
I've heard that if Disney had done that knowing what we know now about how crappy the sequels were it would've made them look very bad to have an adaptation for something like New Jedi Order showing a Luke that fans wanted or the Thrawn Trilogy showing Mara Jade and the rest of them. Maybe even Darth Bane or Revan. It would've been more money for Disney although I do remember Heart of the Jedi being taken off of Amazon after all the buzz it got (currently reading that now).
Do you think that would've made Disney look bad? Especially considering what we got.
I will say this was my first exposure to the shill media because when the EU got discontinued a lot of nerd sites I used to frequent were crapping all over the EU and saying it was a wonderful idea which confused me because those same sites used to praise it. Then after Ghostbusters 2016 came out and they were saying the original Ghostbusters was never that good, I understood what was happening.
Yes. More so that of the larger complaints regarding the EU the DT then went ahead and copied those those like Palpatine clones.
It doesn't matter what Disney, or any modern entertainment company knows, they simply want money and will vivisect decades old franchises however they see fit. Bane had already been fucked up by Disney as the 'Force Dyad' bullshit from the sequels is now the founding reason for 'The Rule of Two' where the Sith were trying to create their own Dyad. Revan is going to get fucked over in the KotoR remake. Mara Jade wouldn't fly in modern woke entertainment being both a redhead and existing as a servant to Palpatine, [an old hwite male].
Keep in mind for both Fallen Order and the Kenobi series the lead was a stronk black wamman, mostly because Kenobi literally lifted the entire plot from FO down to the scene invoking breaking the underwater window to escape the Inquisitor HQ, because modern day Star Wars has no creative talent.
TFA is ANH remade. Poorly.
TLJ is Empire. Also poorly.
TROS is RotJ. Made so badly it's possibly killed the future of the franchise hence all future projects being set in the past.
That ship sailed years ago, actual fans are just now finally realising after seeing the full picture along with various other franchises crashing in the same way and berating fans in the process. Much like with The Witcher there aren't as many Star Wars shills now so fans are "finding their voice" so to speak because they aren't getting astroturfed to the same level when things first released.
The Witcher sub on PReddit is a very different experience now compared to when the Netflix series started. Similar to when the Disney Star Wars movies came out any and all dissent from clapping like retarded seals/CONSOOMING was jumped on by a mob. Once time passed and more and more saw that the movies were in fact shit the money stopped rolling so any paid shills vanished again leaving only actual viewers who had previously been banned, gaslit, called various names under the sun.
We all know these tactics since this is an old playbook for GG vets: sexist, racist, etc, and it actually repilled quite a few normies who suddenly found themselves on the end of the namecalling they had possibly taken part in when it was some other franchise they didn't care about as much.
Not that it did anything good for the show as it's just another franchise for modern entertainment companies to buy, turn inside out, and discard after.
Cavill is redpilling a few since the showrunners are flinging all sorts of shit at the walls and hoping something, anything sticks. The DC/Superman issue is likely also far more incendiary than many realise given Cavill's manager is The Rock's ex wife and mother of his child. The cameo in Black Adam was not for Cavill's sake.
"But they got divorced in 2008!"
What's the Samoan equivalent of a "cohencidence"? 🤔
Very true about Mara Jade. I didn’t watch the Kenobi series but I don’t understand why in the world Leia would be in it. Well, I know why since they are obsessed with female leads. The book Kenobi would been a great template for a show
Precisely, Luke has already been desecrated in TLJ so no need to retread that again although metaphorically I'm sure many would want to were they behind the wheel and saw Luke still twitching in the rear view mirror after being run over.
"A book would have been a great template for a show"
Sums up modern day live action adaptations however even when this is the case it still gets fucked up. Star Wars, Wheel of Time, The Witcher, Game of Thrones for the most part and definitely Dance of Dragons, even games get the same treatment like with Halo.
They all had material, good and bad, that could have been used but a combination of greed and woke ego means nobody wanted to pay any of the original creators of the expanded material and that "the message" was far more important than faithfully adapting any source material. Witcher heads have said they care more about the chance to do spinoffs than adapt the actual books for another example there and s2 was pretty much there anyway since the only episode that followed any book material was the first and coincidentally that's the only episode most actual fans liked.
Wheel of Time was never going to work simply due to the fact only 3 years occur across the 14 books. That's far too much material for even the somewhat common standard of 7 seasons many shows go for unless it's a CW show that just doesn't die.
I guess I’m being naive but I’m still shocked that the showrunner for wheel of time seems to be so clueless
"Clueless".
Once is an accident, twice is happenstance, thrice is enemy action.
Agreed. I was being kind.
Unfortunately I don’t think Disney cares about looking bad or making money. If Disney really cared about money they wouldn’t have thrown away the extended universe because that’s what it was: a license to print money.
I think since it’s been subverted so hard it’s just being used as a propaganda engine. I refuse to believe anyone in charge could fuck things up this badly by accident. They only care about raping these beloved properties into the ground to intentionally destroy them. If it makes them money, great. If it doesn’t, who cares? They’ve already got plenty of money and backing for them to buy up and destroy more beloved properties.
Kathleen Kennedy was 100% in charge of star wars once disney took over. She ruined everything because she's trash. The 1 project she wasn't involved with at all - the Mandalorian - did super well.
Disney execs just didn't have any talent and deferred to KK.
If I was to guess. Kathleen Kennedy hates the original trilogy because of Luke and Han being men. She wanted to destroy their characters so the entire EU had to be scrubbed. The new series being bad never crossed her mind, I think she is way to narcissistic for that.
I also think that once they finish milking this time-line they will go to the old republic and continue there.
Disney would never have kept the EU. KK and those with her wanted to put their spin on star wars, ignoring whether or not the masses would enjoy it. They crashed and burned with the sequel trilogy (something that I have an extreme love/hate relationship with), and the large amount of star wars shows on Disney+ have severely harmed the brand. I think it is possible for it to rebound, but I think putting SW to rest for a decade or two will definitely help the damage to subside.
Can’t argue there. I get that they wanted to do their own thing but I don’t get why they couldn’t just have a separate universe and continue stories in it.
How is it a love hate relationship? I hated it but it just seemed like they didn’t care. Although when it was first announced I was excited.
It's Disney, they simply didn't want to pay royalties on anything so even when they ended up duplicating numerous stories and plot points with their garbage it wasn't directly copied therefore Disney didn't have to spend any money it didn't want.
I like the first half of The Force Awakens. Then they bring in starkiller base and you can tell they completely changed the second half of the movie to have Death Star III. I also like some aspects of The Last Jedi, such as the space battles, the visuals, and actually Luke mentally fighting Kylo Ren, although I would have had him fight the Knights of Ren on his island at the same time, to show how powerful he was, as well as defeat them or draw with them. I hate The Rise of Skywalker, as if I wanted a better version, then I would just read the Dark Empire Trilogy again.
I wish Luke had fought him in person too. I do hate Luke being a grumpy hermit. I would’ve loved to have seen him training new Jedi. Also Rian Johnson is typical of todays movie makers in wanting to deconstruct and I guess I’m tired of it. A story about Luke becoming disillusioned and finding redemption could be great if written well but due to the vastly different directors that wasn’t going to happen.
I remember Disney fans crapping on Dark Empire. I liked it. I also think all my reading of the EU made me dislike the sequels. I really enjoyed reading their further adventures and the new characters introduced as well as the children. Making Han a deadbeat dad seems to be in line with modern Hollywood though
Han was never going to end well. Even in the EU, they killed of characters in terrible ways. Honestly, if they would have just put together a plan and executed it, even if it wasn't great, it would have turned out far better. TLJ, for example, feels like parts 2-3.5, as the last portion of the movie feels like the middle of the trilogy finale. TROS was never going to be good, but that final space battle is just so horrendous that the movie can never recover in my eyes.
Sorry again for my rant. Star Wars was my first “nerd love” and I guess I’ll alaways be bitter towards Disney for ruining it in my opinion. I liked Mandalorian somewhat but I have no interest in what they do with Star Wars and cancelled Disney plus. I’m content with my mountain of EU books and comic books.
Once I was told I was sexist for not liking Rey and I said I’m so sexist I would’ve loved a trilogy centered around Jain Solo. They didn’t know who that was.
Jaina and Jacen Solo, along with Anakin Solo. Anytime I talk to people about them their minds just melt away lol
Yep. Would’ve made such a better story
I’ll never understand why they didn’t have their canon but keep telling stories within EU universe
Because normies are thick as shit and "multiple realities" would confuse them without a massive run up like the MCU has done. First they bring up the idea of a multiverse in Spider-Man Far From Home, then they drop ideas about it in other projects before finally, actually bringing it to life, and then other projects also start using it.
Star Wars is a 40+ year old franchise that would have thousands of years of stories in the EU to consider that would very likely confuse people with attention spans so short they don't realise when something is contradictory. Time travel was only just introduced to the franchise because Filoni bitched about his waifu again and causes enough problems that then bringing in a canon alternate reality of sorts would just be a massive headache for Disney who only ever care about money.
You are right. I guess I can take solace in the fact that I can always have my Star Wars head canon.
