I think the point is that, from 100 years ago through to today, it hasn’t been black men controlling their own image in popular culture, but a mysterious tribe of eternally “oppressed” desert merchants.
Go look at who invented and promulgated “gangsta rap” and who handles (agents, managers, “personal trainers”, etc) black celebrities.
That’s why people like Kyrie and Ye and Ice Cube and Chappelle speak out.
