I have to agree, you can lack religion and be good and religion can be corrupted. Unfortunately without religion we still get our moralities from other places and those places tent to be shit.
I disagree. I believe religion got their moralities from humanity and if we just tend to the better angels of our nature, we can be better as a species. A lot of the badshit happens in life because there's no good authority figures that consistently provide a stable role model for children. There are few who are willing to take on the role of parent, that includes the problems of being one as well.
I used to volunteer at the Pearl Harbor Memorial. We had to be careful because so many, including the people paying for the area, treated it like it was sacred.
Nationalism is taking religious ideas and placing it on the state. This isn't evil, but many have used it for that. Recognizing what is happening becomes very important.

That is to say, I disagree that religion is necessary for good morals. They do tend to filter out most of the bad ones, though.
