Tencent poached their way into the proceedings by acquiring the Hong Kong development partner. Insinuation here is that they tried to leverage that into actual control of the game rights for the Tolkien IP, which I find easy to suspect was the whole point of insinuating themselves in the first place.
That said, the game would have been trash trying to reinforce the 'new' take on Tolkien, so good riddance.
For a minute, I thought this was about Lord of the Rings Online.

"eldenring developers" were already flailing in the water when they said they brought on GRRM as if it were a positive thing, when GRRM famously in the Puppies debacle took the stance that diversity was more important than quality.
Yeah. Gonna assume they are totally compromised either their next game or following game when the cancerous growth spreads in the company.
