Syphilis is common in the tropics, not just the Americas. It's been detected in ancient bones that were mutilated by disease. It's even been hypothesized by the fact that some of those affected by the most horrifying strain (face rotting off) were from pre-contact graves, that it might have come from North Africa or the middle east. Sometimes, shit is neat and horrifying.
